A Thousand Faces of the Moon

📍 On the rooftop of Higashikitazawa Station (Outside the ticket gates)

Although there is only one moon, the side visible to us—and the patterns we see—differ depending on the region. Beyond that, I felt that the moon might take on a different significance depending on the viewer's circumstances, environment, or timing; this inspired me to create a wide variety of moons.

Additionally, the moon signage made with reflective material emits a special glow when viewed from the angle where light is directed at it. It is only natural for people to hold diverse perceptions and values regarding a single object, and I hope this project prompts the question: how do we enjoy that situation? During the exhibition, I will also host a silkscreen printing workshop featuring moon motifs. Silkscreening allows participants to take their own moon home, and I believe the process pairs well with the character of this neighborhood, known for its vintage clothing shops.

Artist

Teppei Kaneuji

Born in 1978 and based in Kyoto, the artist and sculptor serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture at Kyoto City University of Arts. He completed his master’s degree in sculpture at the university’s Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2003. His artistic practice employs a collage-like approach—cutting out and reassembling parts of everyday objects—to reinterpret existing contexts. He has held solo exhibitions at venues such as the Yokohama Museum of Art (2009), the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, 2013), and the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (2016), and has exhibited work in numerous curated and international exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Since 2011, he has worked on multiple stage designs and, in recent years, has also created his own stage productions. His awards include the Kyoto City New Artist Award (2012), the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award (Encouragement Award, 2015), the 29th Takashimaya Cultural Foundation Award (2018), and the Kyoto Prefecture Award for Distinguished Service in Culture (2025).

Join this workshop to have "Moon"-themed designs silk-screen printed onto your personal belongings right on the spot.

Time: 6:00PM–8:30PM

Duration: 15–20 minutes (including drying time)

Participation Fee: 3,000 yen～

★ Enjoy the Autumn Night Sky! Stargazing Event

Come observe the autumn night sky from the rooftop of Higashi-Kitazawa Station—an area usually closed to the public. We also offer opportunities to try out entry-level astronomical telescopes, which are available for purchase.
